Why give to the Asmara Children’s Center?

    In Tanzania, it is often the case that children do not have the opportunity to attend a good school.

    Reasons for this can be that the journey to the nearest school is too long, parents cannot afford the school fees, or the children do not have time to go to school because they have to help out around the house or in the fields.

    In addition, children with disabilities in particular are unfortunately often excluded from society. Many parents are afraid of the reactions of others and hide their children at home. Another problem is that the support these children need in a school context is very often not available.

    Asmara Children’s Center is a registered charitable organization based in Kwa Mrefu, Arusha, Tanzania. Founded in 2012 to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing them with education, shelter, and essential needs at no cost.

    Currently, the center operates a pre-primary school, where children attend classes during the day and return home. However, some children live at the center because their home environments are unsafe.

    Since its establishment, over 223 children have benefited from this program, and 183 have been sponsored to attend private English Medium schools.

No child is “disadvantaged.”

They are “opportunity challenged.”

  • Donations are used to cover ongoing costs—including food, medicine, and teaching materials. As well as acute emergencies, which can arise from time to time. In the past, this has included repairing the water tank or renovating the project building following damage caused by a storm.

  • When transferring your donation to our association's account, please indicate the specific purpose for which you would like to donate. This way, we'll always know exactly what your donation will be used for.

    Upon request, we’d be happy to provide news or updates on how the project is currently progressing.

  • The school fee for a whole school year is the equivalent of $600 (depending on the current exchange rate).

    With an amount of $50 per month, the entire school costs (including school uniforms, tracksuits, notebooks, books, pens, hot meals) and the transfer fees to Tanzania can be covered.

    Of course, sponsoring a child can also be shared by several people (e.g., families, groups of friends)! ​​For example, if four people share the sponsorship, the monthly fee would be just $15 each.

  • Primary school education in Tanzania lasts seven years. Two to three years of preschool are usually added prior to primary school. Thus, a sponsorship typically lasts approximately ten years for a child's primary education.

    It would be desirable for the school sponsorship to continue at least for this period, so that the child can complete primary school.

    However, we understand that at times it may happen that sponsors are no longer able to continue the sponsorship for a variety of reasons.

    Since we rely on monthly donations and would like to find a new sponsor for the child as quickly as possible in the event of a sponsorship termination, we request (also out of fairness to the child) a three-month termination period.
